FDA pulls Darvocet

The FDA has asked for immediate (as of November 23, 2010) market withdrawal of all medications containing propoxyphene after receiving new clinical data showing that the drug, even when taken at recommended doses, causes significant changes to the electrical activity of the heart and puts patients at risk of potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythm abnormalities. Five years after Great Britain (2005) and a year after the rest of Europe (2009) removed the popular painkillers the FDA has finally removed the drugs from the U.S. market.

History of Darvocet

Darvocet was created & introduced over 50 years ago by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals Inc. Originally approved as a painkiller by the FDA in 1957, it was removed by European regulators in 2005 for a variety of safety reasons. Advocacy groups have petitioned since 1978 for the FDA to remove the drugs from the market in the U.S. After thousands of deaths in patients that have taken this medication, the FDA has finally acted in our best interests.
