Granuflo Dry Acid Concentrate is a powdered drug used to treat people suffering from chronic kidney disease and acute renal failure. It is manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMC). Since its FDA approval in 2003, the drug has dominated the dialysis market in the US, being used by patients throughout the country. It netted $12.8 billion in revenue from its dialysis machines and disposable products.
Granuflo has been linked to multiple patient deaths from sudden cardiac failure. Internal memos by FMC have revealed that the company was aware that the drug had serious side effects, including death for patients undergoing hemodialysis. However, that did not stop the company from conducting business as usual, as it continued to sell and administer Granuflo without warning patient of the serious side effects, and without giving them proper instructions.
Uses of Granuflo
During dialysis, Granuflo, a chemical component of DIALYSATE, is used to clean the blood of patients suffering from End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
Granuflo Side Effects
The primary side effect of GranuFlo excessive bicarbonate in the blood. This surplus of bicarbonate can create conditions in patients that can potentially be deadly.
Excess bicarbonate from GranuFlo may also lead to:
- Low blood pressure
- Cardiac arrest
- Cardiac arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat
- Low blood oxygen (hypoxemia)
- Low blood potassium (hypokalemia)
- Increased blood carbon dioxide (Hypercapnia)
A number of lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer of GranuFlo, many of which are for cases involving death from using Granuflo. Plaintiffs claim that FMC did not adequately warn consumers of the dangers associated with using GranuFlo.
On March 29, 2013, all federally-filed Granuflo lawsuits were consolidated to the U.S. Federal Court for the District of Massachusetts. This will allow for a coordinated pretrial and discovery process, as well as will conserve resources for all involved parties and allow for a more consistent resolution of cases. As of February 2014, 515 lawsuits are pending against Fresenius in the Granuflo MDL (multidistrict litigation).
