What is Dabigatran?
Dabigatran etexilate is used in medications such as Pradaxa to prevent blood clots and stroke in patients suffering from arterial fibrillation. Pradaxa is a prescribed medication taken orally and should not be taken if you have prior cases of kidney complications or history of ulcers. Pradaxa is currently the only brand medication using dabigatran etexilate as its active ingredient.
Dabigatran and the Body
Dabigatran is a type of medicine called a direct thrombin inhibitor and is used to prevent clotting within the blood vessels. When a clot is formed, the body produces an enzyme called thrombin which is necessary for the formation of the clot. Dabigatran stifles this process (hence thrombin inhibitor) by binding to thrombin during clotting and blocks it from forming the protein fibrin, which prevents the platelet cells from binding together and forming the clot.
Typical blood clots only form when a cut or other injury has occurred and prevents excessive blood loss by stifling the wound. In patients who have recently undergone a hip or knee replacement, however, a clot can form within the surrounding blood vessels due to slowing blood flow from lack of mobility. These clots can then flow into the lungs and cause a serious condition known as a pulmonary embolism.
Patients with an arterial fibrillation are at constant risk of forming blood clots due to the irregular blood flow within the circulatory system. Blood clots can form within the vessels or heart, then flow into the brain and cause a stroke.
While not everyone will experience side effects of Pradaxa (dabigatran), you should notify your doctor if you begin to suffer from any of the following:
- Abnormal bleeding
- Blood in stool or urine
- Dizziness or weakness
- Difficulty or pain when breathing or swallowing
- Coughing or vomiting blood
- Rash, hives, or other epidermal irritation
