Pradaxa Side Effects
Pradaxa is an anticoagulant medication prescribed to patients suffering from a condition known as atrial fibrillation. Dabigatran, the active chemical in Pradaxa, prevents the formation of blood clots that may lead to stroke.
Side Effects of Pradaxa
The more common side effects of taking Pradaxa may include:
- Stomach Pain
- Nausea
- Heart burn
- Headache
Pradaxa side effects may also include:
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Pink or brown urine
- Red or maroon colored stool
- Coughing or vomiting blood
- Bleeding from the gums
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Joint pain or swelling
- Dizziness or feeling of weakness
- Rash, hives, or other skin itching or irritation
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Swelling of extremities
If you experience ANY of these symptoms while taking Pradaxa, tell your doctor immediately.
Dangerous Bleeding
Due to the blood thinning affect of dabigatran, instances of extended or excessive bleeding have occurred in some patients. Feelings of weakness or dizziness, bruising, or unusual bleeding may be due to the anticoagulant affecting the blood. If you are due for surgery, dental work or other types of medical testing, be sure to notify the dentist or your doctor beforehand and tell them you are taking Pradaxa.
Deaths Related to Pradaxa
Since its approval by the FDA, there have been more than 260 reports of deaths caused by Pradaxa. The “blood thinning” aspect of this medication has been known to cause excessive bleeding which may lead to death. What used to be a typical cut or bump on the head can become life threatening when taking Pradaxa. Notify your doctor if any serious symptoms begin to occur.
